As a woman. As a human being. Be soft, but be firmly territorial.
Being territorial is not the same as being proud. It is not arrogance. It is not selfishness. It is not becoming inaccessible. It simply means you understand that there are things in your life that are too valuable to leave unguarded.
Your dreams, vision, purpose, peace, energy, passion, atmosphere, time, calling and yes, your body. These are sacred. And sacred things deserve protection.
I know that in our African culture, we are beautifully interconnected. We carry one another's burdens. We celebrate together. We mourn together. We are raised to believe that life is shared, and in many ways, that is a beautiful thing. But sometimes, what begins as togetherness quietly becomes enmeshment. The lines begin to blur. Other people's priorities become yours. Other people's emergencies become your daily routine. Other people's expectations begin to dictate your decisions.
Before long, you are living according to someone else's agenda, someone else's timing, someone else's rhythm, while your own dreams quietly wait in the background. You cannot go far like that. You cannot build a meaningful life without clear lines of demarcation. You cannot protect your peace without protecting your boundaries. You cannot fulfill purpose while constantly abandoning yourself to meet every demand placed before you.
Boundaries are not barriers against love. They are the architecture that allows love to remain healthy.
Hear me carefully, because I believe in balance. There are doors, and there are walls. A door is intentional. It allows in what belongs. It keeps out what does not. A wall, however, shuts everything out. Do not become a wall because you have been hurt. Do not become so guarded that you lock out healing, genuine friendships, wise counsel, divine opportunities, and love itself.
Wisdom is knowing the difference. Wisdom is understanding that saying "no" to one thing often means saying "yes" to something far greater.
Not everyone deserves unrestricted access to your life. Not every opinion deserves space in your mind. Not every invitation deserves your calendar. Not every relationship deserves your emotional investment.
And that is okay.
Your mental health depends on this understanding. So does your family, your career, your purpose. The strongest people are not those who give every piece of themselves away, but those who know what must be protected.
Think about the lion.
One of the reasons it is called the king of the jungle is because it fiercely guards its territory. It is not driven by pride but by purpose. It understands that what it protects is directly connected to its survival. Perhaps we should learn something from that.
Protect your peace, your home, your dreams and your mind. Guard your atmosphere with intention. Guard your heart with wisdom. Guard your time with discipline.
And when you decide who stays and what goes, do so firmly and unapologetically. Not because you think you are better than anyone. But because you finally understand that purpose cannot flourish where boundaries do not exist. You will only rise to the extent that you guard your borders.
Be soft.
Leave the door open for what God intends to bring into your life.
But never forget to guard the gate.
